Ekta Sawhney is the Manager, Business development at MCI
India. She provides solutions to international associations who
are interested in organizing conferences in India. In her
current profile she has managed the 12000 delegate, 20 day
conference organized by The United Nation’s Biodiversity
conference – The Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the
Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held at
Hyderabad in October 2012.
Ekta heads the sustainability team for MCI India and is
responsible for aligning all MCI India offices and all employees

About Andrew
Andrew has worked in the meetings industry since 2005. A
growing interest in CSR led to his decision to specialize in
Sustainable Meeting and Event Management. In 2012 he
completed his Master in Environmental Studies (MES) and
wrote his dissertation on event sustainability standards ISO
20121 and APEX/ASTM.
He has been an active member of the Green Meeting Industry
Council (GMIC) since joining in 2007 and served on the global
Board of Directors. He is also a 12-year member of Meeting
Professionals International (MPI) and in 2013 joined the
organization full-time as Manager, Events. Among his duties,
Andrew leads MPI's ongoing efforts to integrate CSR activities
and sustainable practices into the event planning process.

About Babs
Babs Nijdam discovered her passion for the event industry
seven years ago when she became Business Development
Manager at Amsterdam RAI, where she was responsible for
bringing large corporate events to Amsterdam. In addition, she
was CSR ambassador at Amsterdam RAI. Within this role, she
has contributed to the organisation’s CSR marketing study,
among other things.
Since the fall of 2014, Babs focusing more on the organizer side
as a freelance project manager. Of course, within this role, CSR
will continue to play an important part. Babs is President and
initiator of the Dutch chapter of the GMIC (Green Meeting
Industry Council).The latter’s objective is to provide its
members with an effective, ‘green’ network and education.

About Ulrika
Ulrika Mårtensson is a communications professional with 15
years of experience in the international meetings industry. She
is the ‘Head of Communications – Meetings & Conventions’ in
Wonderful Copenhagen Convention Bureau and the ‘master
mind’ behind the #BeeSustain campaign launched by
Wonderful Copenhagen to generate a global buzz around the
importance of sustainability in the meetings industry.
Ulrika has been involved with the Copenhagen Sustainable
Meetings Protocol – which pioneered by eco-certifying the
United Nation’s Climate Change Conference COP15 that
attracted 30,000 people to Copenhagen in 2009. She also played
an active role in the Danish Sustainable Event Initiative, a
private-public collaboration which successfully eco-certified
the Danish European Union Presidency in 2012.

An inspirational futurist, strategist, and thought leader, Guy
Bigwood founded MCI’s sustainability programme in 2007
when MCI became the first event, association and congress
management company to sign the UN Global Compact. He has
since developed one of the most comprehensive sustainability
programmes in the industry, and leads MCI Sustainability
Services, a global consulting practice focused on helping
organisations to visualise, plan and implement sustainable

Guy advises the UN, associations, businesses and governments

Elin Hughes-Jones started as an intern for Positive Impact in

Fiona Pelham launched not for profit Positive Impact in 2005 to
provide education for a sustainable event industry. She is also
managing director of Sustainable Events Ltd and voluntary

Fiona has recently received an honorary doctorate from The
Leeds Metropolitan University for services to the event industry

Heather Miller rose through several positions at Gaylord Palms
Resort & Convention Center, including Catering Assistant and
Conference Coordinator, managing 400,000 square foot of space

executing “flawless” multi-million dollar meeting programs for
the Marriott International property.
With a flair for innovation, for the past year Heather has
created and managed custom teambuilding and charity give-
back events for groups with 10-3,000 attendees at Play with a
Purpose. They create, design and deliver hundreds of events a
year all over the world, from teambuilding and training
programs to promotions and special events, believing the
entire process should be a joy for both the planner and the

specializing in helping people become more productive and
comfortable with technology. He delivers over 150 seminars
annually, and is a faculty member at New York University since

With hospitality industry colleague Corbin Ball, Jim released in
2012 the TechSpec app, helping meeting planners to assess the
technology capabilities of a hotel during a site inspection. In
2014, Jim joined the Board of Directors for Rock and Wrap It
Up, an anti-poverty/hunger think tank, which supports over
43,000 agencies in North America. Jim co-created for them the
Whole Earth Calculator app, which helps organization’s

Mariela McIlwraith specializes in business strategy, economics

About Shawna
Shawna McKinley is a sustainability specialist who believes in
the power of events to make the world a better place. She helps
event professionals take practical, smart steps to improve their
events through zero waste and carbon conscious choices that
generate social good, business value, and happy event
participants.
Since 1996 Shawna has worked at the crossroads of event
management and sustainability. Her journey began with the
the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, BC, has evolved
through the creation and cultivation of numerous community
festivals as an event planner and through environmental
advocacy projects in the non-profit sector.
Shawna’s passion for this work continues in the present and
future by helping my clients realize the social, environmental
and business benefits of sustainable events.

About Paul
Paul Salinger’s goals have always been to challenge
conventions, come up with creative ideas for delivering

including President, and often helps craft their annual

A Theatre Arts major in college, Paul spent 15 years in event
production management after graduating. He worked as an

for various event marketing companies for the subsequent 10
years. Paul then spent eight years as creative concepts/event
strategies/strategic communications role for Oracle
marketing, working his way to his current position as Vice
President, Marketing and bringing sustainability to major
corporate events such as Oracle Open World.

Jessie joined MPI as a storyteller for The Meeting Professional

About Lisa
Lisa Holmes is an enthusiastic supporter of CSR and
sustainability efforts within the travel, hospitality and events
industry. A meeting planner within the Canadian government
for the past decade, she is also an active member of the Ottawa
Chapter of MPI as a volunteer on the Program and Education
Committee, the Community Outreach and CSR Committee and
the National Meetings Industry Day (NMID) Committee.
In 2012, Lisa organized an educational workshop for MPI
Ottawa called Next Steps in Sustainable Events, bringing
together experts in sustainability while securing a sponsorship
with EventMobi, which helped to introduce Ottawa Chapter
planners to how technology contributes to making events
sustainable. Lisa is a recipient of the MPI Ottawa Chapter
Volunteer of the Year award and the Queen Elizabeth Diamond
Jubilee Medal.

1978, and founded MeetGreen in 1994. Internationally
recognized as a leader in the environmentally responsible

Magazine in 2003 and 2008.
Nancy is co-founder of the Green Meeting Industry Council, a

Mandy Kalitsis’ love of South America started with a 6-month
internship in Argentina, working with a small environmental
organization after finishing her degree in biology and further
studies in environmental restoration. She traveled through
Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Brazil before returning to her home
town of Toronto, Canada. She soon headed back to Peru, this
time to work in tourism, and quickly added Ecuador and
Venezuela to her list of countries visited; she has an affinity
for food, nature, the traditions and lifestyles of local
communities and the opportunity to explore new places.
Mandy has been the tour leader to hundreds of people in her
adopted home of Peru and has had the opportunity to see
