Sea port management in bangladesh
1. Assignment On
Sea port Management In Bangladesh
Introduction :
Almost every country in the world has one or more sea port who has off
shore iseland or costal area.Because in thiscompetitive world a country
can not progress its self without better shipping facilities and developed
sea port.Basically for this purpose the developed and developing
countries like Bangladesh are trying their best to make their ports more
digital and effective for both their and the whole world. In the present
era of integrated global economy, role of sea ports has shifted greatly
from mere geographical gateway to transportation hub. Therefore, it
requires efficient service delivery in ports as well as in other associated
areas to ensure competitiveness of port in the global market. However,
Bangladeshi sea ports are not yet considered efficient to the global
standard in terms of both technical and non-technical issues. This study
draws attention, besides technical efficiency, to various issues of sea
port management in Bangladesh.which is required for the competitive
pursuit. It also analyzed problems and prospects of Bangladeshi sea
ports through interviewing experts in ports management. This study
found operational inefficiency, infrastructural bottleneck, backward
transportation network, poor ICT usages, difficulties in overall financial
system, etc. as the most pressing problems in port management in
Bangladesh. Conversely, having Sub-South Asian hinterland is a great
opportunity for the port development in Bangladesh. To accrue utmost
benefits from the ports, ensuring overall congenial environment
addressing multi-sectoral issues for smooth op, eration of port is very
essential in Bangladesh. The study concludes that if Bangladesh
Government wants to develop, ports are to be considers a much wider
spectrum of economic subsectors and appropriate policy has to be
designed accordingly.

2. Definition :
There is not any proper definition of aa sea port. But we can give some
definition by our own. But some time it won't be correct. May be For
that some time we try to get help fome Internet to make a proper
definition.
A seaport is a facility which can accommodate ships which go out to
sea. Seaports can be found in natural and artificial harbors along many
coastlines in the world, and they have a variety of fixtures including
cranes to help ships handle cagos and docks for ships to attach. Seaports
are of economic and strategic importance to the nations which hold
them, because they can be used for everything from shipping out a
nation's consumer products to loading up troop ships to sail to war.
This might be Correct. But men are not satisfied without their own ideas
and thought.I am also not different from the nature of humans
Satisfaction.
I think,In general, A port which has a direct connection with an ocen or
sea and has a good width and depth to entire a cargo or passengers ships
without any problems and also have a good facilities to deliver the ships
and the systems of customs clearing and forwarding will must be world
class. With these qualities we can call a port is a sea port.
Ports can also be found in inland waters such as lakes and rivers, but
they are not known as seaports because they do not have facilities for
seagoing ships. In some cases, inland ports have no outlet to the ocean,
and in other instances, the waterway may not be navigable by
oceangoing ships. Not all seagoing ships can fit in a seaport, either: large
oil tankers, for example, actually dock offshore while smaller tenders
load and offload their cargo.

3. A typical seaport includes equipment and facilities for handling and
storing cargo, such as warehouses and cranes, along with amenities
which are designed to appeal to people coming into port, such as
restaurants and hotels. Ship building and repair companies are typically
located near ports for the convenience of their clients, and sea ports may
also have facilities for quarantine and other special needs; a well-
designed port may allow people to get everything they need without
straying more than a few blocks away from their ship.
Seaports perform different type of operations:
Seaports are points of convergence of inland and coastal transportation
systems, defining a seaport's hinterland. This function may be direct, as
freight reaches a port directly through road transportation, or indirect as
freight reaches a seaport through an inland port (e.g., rail station) or
through traffic consolidation at a regional seaport and shipped by coastal
transportation. Likewise, seaports are points of distribution to inland and
coastal transportation systems, defining a seaport's foreland.

Loading, unloading and transshipment of cargo to and from the
vessels
• Storage and warehousing of merchandise on land and stevedoring
to and from vessels
• Provide inland access and intermodal connections
• Complementary services to shipping carriers
The main functions of seaports are:
• To ensure safety for seagoing vessels entering, operation in and
leaving the seaport
• To provide facilities and equipment necessary for seagoing vessels

warehousing and preservation service in the seaport
• To provide shelter, repair, maintenance of necessary services to
seagoing vessels and other crafts in emergency cases

Types of port
Seaports around the world are a key part of the modern global trade
infrastructure. Because they vary hugely in geographical location there
can be many differences in the ways that they operate and deal with
traffic and cargo. One of the keys to the safe navigation and utilisation
of seaports is the availability of accurate and up to date port data. This
can come in the form of port guides, port plans and a port directory. A
port database will contain information on anything from approach
information to cargo types. Seaports broadly fall into three categories
which are
• Cruise port
• Ports of call
• Cargo ports

5. Ports have been working as catalysts of economic development, and
most of the developed cities around the world are situated on the bank of
different rives and are virtuous because of their ports. Historically,
Chittagong port was the gateway of trade in this region. Though could
not subdue fully the economic distress of the people of this region, still
along with the other ports, it has been playing significant role in
Bangladesh economy. Bangladeshi ports could not ensure economic
progress at the desired level due to pitfall of poor infrastructure and
connectivity, inefficiency, absence of international cooperation, etc.
Moreover, absence of capital required for invigorating ports was also
very scarce resource for Bangladesh, which hindered adoption of new
technology and greater yield by the ports. However, recently PPP had
been evolved as a very effective way of channeling private resources for
public cause in an artful manner. Mongla seaport already has
experienced PPP and 13 land ports are in this process. It is expected that
PPP will be very helpful to materialize the goals of Bangladeshi
seaports. Nevertheless, in the present penetration of PPP in different
areas of transportation and port development, attention is not sufficient.
The Government has to consider a much wider spectrum of economic
subsectors and has to design appropriate policy for the development of
ports.
