• I3S technology is one of the best technologies available in automobile industry.
• I3S is a green technology that automatically shuts the
engine when idling and turns it on when needed
• It can assure you to save fuel and reduce green house gas (GHS)
2. WASTING FUEL
Delhi wastes 40kL of fuel per day in traffic jams
6 billions gallons of gasoline wasting in USA per year
11 million tons of CO2 & 0.2 million tons of NOx and 5k tons of particulate
matter into air
3. IDLE START/STOP SYSTEM
• I3S technology is one of the best
technologies available in automobile industry.
• I3S is a green technology that automatically
shuts the
engine when idling and turns it on when
needed
• It can assure you to save fuel and reduce
green house gas (GHS)
4. HISTORY
• Devices of this type have been
developed by Toyota in 1964 tested
since mid 1970s.
• Fiat Regata “ES”, Volkswagen Lupo
“3L” and Audi A2 “3L” etc.
• Recently, Hero Motor Corp has
introduced I3S tech for two wheels in
India
Hero Motors Logo
5. ENGINE START/STOP
• I3S is a battery operated sensor circuit that detects the
idleness of the engine.
• When it detects the idleness of the engine, it turns off
the engine and when clutch/accelerator is pressed it
turns on again.
• You can switch on or off the I3S circuit with a switch
but optimum battery level is needed to operate this
function.
11. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
PRO’S
• Fuel consumption is reduced
by up to 5% – 10% in city
driving
• CO2 emissions are
reduced by up to 5% –10%
• The engine restarts with in
350 ms and in
complete silence.
CON’S
• Fuel saving is not as good as
Hybrid
• Some vehicle functions may
not run when engine
is off (Ex: AC)
• This technology require special
type of battery &
stator
12. • Used in Hero Splendor i -Smart bike
• BMW uses S/S Tech. across many of its cars & MINI line for
2008
• Bentley Bentayaga (2016) model
• General Motors used this Tech. as eAssist Technology
• Volkswagen began using S/S system with polo, Golf & Passat
(2007)
• M&M has introduced the S/S system based on Micro Hybrid
system to India
APPLICATION
13. • More than 50% of the newly registered vehicles will
have Start/Stop as standard technology after 2013
• Even though this technology is widely used in
small/mid segment cars, but it also has high potential
for compact and luxury car segments
• It is key technology to be used with other fuel saving
technologies to attain the stringent carbon norms of
2020
CONCLUSION
