Why evaluate? Why evaluate at level for or Impact…..
For the mission critical skills -
- identify appropriate performance measures;
- ensure there is a credible causal chain between the raining and the desired result
- facilitate transfer along the critical path that leads to the desired results, and
- evaluate continually
Because, IF we can see improved performance - there will be an impact , a consequence , on the organization. It's performance that causes change. We should be able to measure that improvement.
Carefully....very very carefully.
The Systems approach to training has evaluation as the last phase - but we all know that it begins with the needs analysis before you design or conduct train ing for the following reasons:
to get commitment on what to evaluate( course objectives) and how to evaluate after training
to measure gain and document impact ( pre and post improvements)
to identify reinforces and constraints in the workplace that will help or hinder participants to apply what they have learned
get agreement on expectations of the managers of trainees
start to develop the maintenance system that will support desired behaviors back on the job.
This is where we get into trouble....this is where I get into a lot of trouble.
