7. By the Numbers: Female Principals in Public Schools
11% female principals have doctoral
degrees as their first professional
degrees, about 2% higher than male
peers (Figure 1).
29% female principals have education
specialist degrees, 5% higher than their
male peers (Figure 1).

On average, female principals have
12.6 years of teaching experience vs.
10.3 years for male principals
(Figure 2).
On average, female principals had 5.6
years of experience as a principal in
1993, but in 2016, 6.2 years. For
males, the average years of experience
as a principal decreased from 10.3
years to 7 years (Figure 2).
9. By the Numbers: Female Principals in Public Schools
The average annual salary of female principals has been lower than that of their
male peers. In 2015-16, the difference was about $2,000 (Figure 3).
