Inviting Someone to Do Something

                                  verb + ませんか
                                             masen ka

The 「verb + ませんか」pattern is used to invite someone to do something. You can
              masen ka
use the「verb + ませんか」(= the present tense negative verb, plus the question particle
                masen ka
か ) to extend an invitation. It should be noted that its affirmative counterpart, ますか ,
ka masuka
cannot be so used. Thus a sentence like 「あさくさに いきますか。」can only be
                                                    asakusa ni ikimasuka
construed as a question, not as an invitation.

                    いっしょに あさくさに いきませんか。
issho ni asakusa ni ikimasen ka
Why don t we go to Asakusa together?

                           ええ/はい、 いきましょう。
                            e e / h a i i k i m a s h o u
                                    Ye s , l et s go.
Appropriate replies for the invitation are as follows.

1. Acceptance :

  a.
ええ/はい、 *verb stem + ましょう。 *verb stem = remove ます
         e e / h a i mashou
Yes, let s [verb]. from the ます form verb

  b.
               ええ/はい、 ぜひ。
                e e / h a i zehi
                  Yes, I d love to.

2. Refusal :

                  ざんねんですが、 つごうが わるいです。
zannendesuga t sug ou ga wa ru i de su

I m sorry, but it wouldn t be convenient (for me at this moment).
verb stem + ましょうか。
                                            mashouka
                               Shall we [verb]?

Then once you are almost certain of your listener s intention and there is already

a situation or a context where something is expected, 「verb stem + ましょうか」
                                                                         mashouka
(= the acceptance reply of let s [verb] , plus the question particle か ) is used.
                                                                    ka

                        なんじに あいましょうか。
                        nanji ni ai mashou ka
                        Wh a t ti m e s h a l l we m e et?

                           6じに あいましょう。
roku ji ni ai mashou ka
                         Le t s m eet a t 6 o c l o c k.
