1) Kanji (Chinese characters), Hiragana, and Katakana
There are three kinds of letters in Japanese : Hiragana,
Katakana, and Kanji ( Chinese characters).

All three characters can be sen in a single sentence.

Hiragana and katakana, like the alphabet, represent sounds.
As you can see in the above example, hiragana has a roundish
shape and is used for conjugation endings, function words, and
native Japanese words not covered by kanji.

Katakana, which has rather straight lines, is normally used for
writing loanwords and foreign names. For example, the Japanese
word for “television” is written in katakana as (terebi).

Kanji, or Chinese characters, represent not just sounds but also
convey the meaning. Mostly, kanji are used for nouns and the
stems of verbs and adjectives.
2) Romaji

Romaji (romanization) is the system of alphabetical spelling used
to transliterate Japanese. One should be careful when reading
Japanese words written in Roman letters as the pronunciation
might be different from standard English. You will be instructed in
“3: Pronunciation” for details. Romaji is usually used for station
names, signs, and so on.
