Retardation And Mental
Deficiency
 Mental retardation refers to sub average
general intellectual functioning which
originates during the developmental period
and is associated with impairment in one or
more of the following: (1) maturation,
(2)learning (3) social adjustment.
 Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized
disorder appearing before adulthood,
characterized by significantly impaired
cognitive functioning and deficits in two or
more adaptive behaviors.
 Mental Deficiency act 1927:
Mental retardation is a condition of arrested
or incomplete development of the mind
which takes place before the age of 18 .
 American Association of Mental
Deficiency(AAMD):
Mental retardation as significantly sub
average in general intellectual functioning
existing currently with deficit in adaptive
behavior & manifested during the
development period

 Under 70 Definite feeble mindedness
 Mild Mental Retardation
 IQ: 50-55 to approximately 70
 Moderate Mental Retardation
 IQ: 35-40 to 50-55
 Severe Mental Retardation
 IQ: 20-25 to 35-40
 Profound Mental Retardation
 IQ: Less than 20-25
Mental Deficience is a state of incomplète
mental development of such a kind and
degree that the individual is incapable
of adapting himself to the normal
environment of his fellows in such a
way to maintain existence
independently of supervision, control
or external support.
 It is when someone lacks the ability to
manage day to day events and/or control
their behavior so that basic physical and
emotional needs are threatened or
unmet.
 These disorders can affect persons of
any age, race, sex, religion, or income.
Mental Deficiency
 It is a illness of the
brain.
 It refers to lower
level of intelligence
 It is due to heredity
factors & is not
remediable.
Mental Retardation
 It is not the illness, it is
a condition.
 It refers to the sub
normal intellectual
functioning which
originates during the
developmental period.
 It is due to both
heredity &
environmental factors ,
is remediable.

Mental retardation

  • 2.  Mental retardation refers to sub average general intellectual functioning which originates during the developmental period and is associated with impairment in one or more of the following: (1) maturation, (2)learning (3) social adjustment.  Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors.
  • 3.  Mental Deficiency act 1927: Mental retardation is a condition of arrested or incomplete development of the mind which takes place before the age of 18 .  American Association of Mental Deficiency(AAMD): Mental retardation as significantly sub average in general intellectual functioning existing currently with deficit in adaptive behavior & manifested during the development period

  • 8.  Mild Mental Retardation  IQ: 50-55 to approximately 70  Moderate Mental Retardation  IQ: 35-40 to 50-55  Severe Mental Retardation  IQ: 20-25 to 35-40  Profound Mental Retardation  IQ: Less than 20-25
  • 9. Mental Deficience is a state of incomplète mental development of such a kind and degree that the individual is incapable of adapting himself to the normal environment of his fellows in such a way to maintain existence independently of supervision, control or external support.
  • 10.  It is when someone lacks the ability to manage day to day events and/or control their behavior so that basic physical and emotional needs are threatened or unmet.  These disorders can affect persons of any age, race, sex, religion, or income.
  • 11. Mental Deficiency  It is a illness of the brain.  It refers to lower level of intelligence  It is due to heredity factors & is not remediable. Mental Retardation  It is not the illness, it is a condition.  It refers to the sub normal intellectual functioning which originates during the developmental period.  It is due to both heredity & environmental factors , is remediable.
